Field with a decorative colour half title. First edition. George Payne Rainsford James (1799 - 1860), was an English novelist and historical writer. In 1825 he wrote his first, and probably his best known novel Richilieu, which wasn't published until 1829. After reading Richilieu, which had been given to him by a friend, and after receiving a letter from James, Walter Scott advised him to take up literature as a profession. He was also given encouragement by Washington Irving. Previous owner's ink inscription dated 1922 to front pastedown. In original cloth binding. Externally, sound but with some wear to extremities, slight rubbing and marks to boards with slight splitting to cloth to head and tail of joints. Internally, firmly bound. Bright but with scattered foxing throughout. Good . Ill.: None. Good .

At an early age he began to write romances, and continued his production with such industry that his works reach to 100 volumes. His books had considerable and immediate popularity. Among his other works are Richelieu, Philip Augustus, The Huguenot, Henry of Guise, and The Man at Arms. Complete in three volumes. In original publishers bindings. Externally, fading to the boards and spines, and wear to extremities. Loss to the spine labels, with volume two's spine label absent. Two rear hinges and one front hinge slightly strained.
